When thinking about retiring overseas, it’s a good idea to give thought to some of the statistics regarding the quality of life in your retirement destination. This particular country has a large number of daily murders, people in poverty, sexually transmitted diseases, homelessness and political instability.
If you retire abroad, could you live in a country like this. Is this an ideal retirement destination for your “golden years”? I frequently encounter expatriates who are unhappy with living abroad and have compiled this data on a controversial country that I think everyone needs to know about should you decide to retire abroad.
Is this country one of the best places to retire? Or should it be avoided. Here are the data on the country:
Crime:
- Approximately 50 people are murdered each day. Most of the victims are young and many die a violent death.
- There are over 1,300,000 violent crimes taking place in this country each year, which translates into nearly 4,000 violent crimes per day.
- There are over 220 cases of forcible rape reported each day.
- Nearly 1,000 incidents of robbery are reported each day.
Poverty:
- Nearly 37 million people live in poverty, an increase from 30 years ago. This is more people living in poverty than Somalia (3.7 million)
- 18% of children live in poverty and have a high risk of becoming a victim of crime.
- Nearly 750,000 people are homeless. Of these, nearly 40% are families with no housing to provide to provide shelter for children.
Health:
- When looking at infant mortality, each year nearly 275,000 babies die at birth in this country’s healthcare system. This compares to the country of Somalia where 46,000 babies die during childbirth each year.
- Nearly 15 million people are infected with a sexually transmitted disease each year. This compares to Somalia with nearly 2 million infections.
- At least 1 out of every 4 teenage (aged 14-19) girls are infected with a sexually transmitted disease.
Political Stability:
- The country has been experienced 15 major military conflicts in the last 50 years. In these conflicts over 63,000 lives have been lost.
- During this period of time there have been less than 10 years of actual peace for this country.
- During the last 50 years, there has been a change in political power 7 times as competing political groups vie for power, sometimes amidst angry accusations of voter fraud and demands for voter recounts.
What country am I?

i’m just curious… the others statistics you mentioned can really be parameters for choosing a place to permanently stay in: peace and order, political stability, poverty. but if you’re already retiring and in your golden years, why should you be interested/worried about a statistic like “1 in 4 teenage girls have STDs?”
