just ran onto this site today while doing an early retirement google search and read quite a few of your musings and observations which i found to be very spot-on and insightful. i was born in the pi but been living in the usa for the last 28 years. i started planning my return to live there permanently. i too was in the peace corps in africa in my younger intrepid years.

are you familiar with kiva.org? you should check it out... its similar to the microlending grameen system started in brazil but it is internet based and the lenders are the can-do supporters who want to help people "fish" as you put it. they have a program where you can be an "intern" in country and help them make in-roads where you are.

feel free to contact me offline as i would like to explore more of what youre doing in anticipation of my own planning to return to the philippines in the next year or 2.

Love the post. I am married to a Filipina and live in the states. We face this poor mentality with her brothers families. I love the story of your mental transition from believing the poor were victims then changing your mind about this.

I read your about page and don't think many of the "poor" would have done what you have done in your life.

I have a home in the Philippines and am working on retireing there as fast as I can. (I'm only 48).

Like the story of the Sari-Sari store. I know she will watch out for the free loaders!

It takes a strong will not to lend to people in the PH.

I hope she does well.. Thanks for the post

Progress seems real good. They are about to open and I'm keeping my fingers crossed for them. They already are having ideas about adding a karaoke room. Haha ... I asked if I'd get a discount on the San Mig Light ... and they smiled and told me - "This is business, you know." And I had a good laugh.

You're doing a wonderful wonderful thing of not letting them rely on you, and teaching them how to fish. I look forward to hearing more about her sari sari store!

Poverty is a choice indeed, there are lots of opportunities out there yet they still choose not to get out of that status. Very nice post you have here, thanks for sharing
